Biography:
MAJOR
JOHN SULLIVAN (U.S. ARMY),
enlisted in the US Army in 1986 as an Infantry Soldier and
attended basic training at Ft Benning GA. Upon completion of
Basic and Advanced Individual Training and earning his
Airborne wings at Fort Benning, Georgia he was assigned to
the 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry
Division, Fort Carson, Colorado where he served from
November 1986 through August 1989 and achieved the rank of
Sergeant. He then transitioned from Active Duty to the
Michigan National Guard where he served with Calumet’s A
Company (Detachment), 107th Engineers as a Combat
Engineer Assistant Squad Leader. In February 1992, he
returned to active duty as a Power Generation Equipment
Repairer and was assigned to the 51st Signal
Battalion in Stuttgart, Germany – then re-assigned, due to
the unit deactivating, to Headquarters and Headquarters
Company, 4-12 Infantry Battalion, 1st Armor
Division, Baumholder, Germany. Upon completion of his
European tour in 1995, then Sergeant Sullivan was assigned
to D Company, 801st Main Support Battalion,
DISCOM, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell,
Kentucky where he served as the Company and Battalion
Retention NCO and was promoted to Staff Sergeant.
In
April 1998, Staff Sergeant Sullivan completed Officer
Candidate School at Ft Benning Georgia and was
commissioned a 2LT in the Ordnance Corps. Lieutenant
Sullivan served as a Platoon Leader and Executive
Officer, 1st Maintenance Company, 541st
Maintenance Support Battalion, from October 1998 through
May 2000. Upon completion of the Captain Career Course
at Ft Lee VA, CPT Sullivan was assigned to the 548th
Corps Support Battalion, 10th Mountain
Division, Ft Drum, New York, as the Adjutant. He held
this position from November 2001 – October 2002 and was
then selected to serve as Company Commander, B- Company,
10th Forward Support Battalion, 10th
DISCOM, Fort Drum, New York. As Company Commander, CPT
Sullivan deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, from August
2003 through May 2004 in support of Operation Enduring
Freedom. Upon redeployment, CPT Sullivan was assigned to
1st Battalion 1st Special Forces
Group (Airborne), in Okinawa, Japan. As the Battalion
Logistics Officer, CPT Sullivan again deployed to
Zamboanga, Philippines in support of Operation Enduring
Freedom-Philippines and served as the Joint Logistic
Officer for the Joint Special Operations Task Force
Philippines of the Special Operations Command. During
this 10-month deployment, CPT Sullivan supported Special
Operations Teams from every branch of the Armed
Services.
In
August 2007, Major Sullivan was again re-assigned from
Okinawa to the 1st Infantry Division, Fort
Riley, Kansas, to serve as a Brigade Logistics Officer
for the National Police Transition Team. Upon completion
of the three months training, he was deployed to Iraq in
support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served from
August 2007 through October 2008 in Samarra, Iraq; where
he provided Logistical support to his 11-man team as
well as coach – teach – mentor the Al-Askerian Brigade
National Police Logistics Officer.
In
December 2008, MAJ Sullivan was assigned as an Assistant
Professor of Military Science and Battalion Executive
Officer for Michigan Technological University Army ROTC
program.
His
military training includes the Officer Candidate School,
Ordnance Officer Basic Course, Logistics Captains Career
Course, Combined Arms Service Staff School, US Army
Recruiter Course, and Transition Team Logistic Officer.
His
awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal,
Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with
six oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with seven
oak leaf clusters, Good Conduct Medal 3rd
Award, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal,
Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War
on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Action Badge, Basic
Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, The US Army
Ordnance Corps Association Award of Samuel Sharpe and
others.
Major John Sullivan is married to the former Carey Luoma
of Laurium, Michigan, and they have five children.
