Last Big Weekend at Portage Lake Golf Course |
Portage Lake Golf Course will be hosting the last two events of the season this upcoming weekend.
On Saturday, September 20th, the Annual 2-Person Ryder Cup Tournament will take
place. The tournament is an 18 hole competition beginning at 1:00pm. Registration
starts at 12:00 noon. The Ryder Cup format consists of teams playing the first 6 holes as
a Scramble, holes 7 through 12 as a Bestball, and the final 6 hole as Alternating Shot.
The tournament is open to anyone. The cost for Members and Michigan Tech students is
$30 per team and for non-members the cost is $50 per team. The fee includes golf,
prizes, and lunch. A skins game and golf contests will also be available.
On Sunday, September 21st, Portage Lake will host the 2009 Member’s Day. The course
is only open to members and guests on Sunday. Food, prizes, raffles, and contests will all
be part of this fun day. Members with a Golf Association of Michigan handicap can also
compete for the President’s Cup trophy. The President’s Cup is an 18 hole stroke
tournament that incorporates every competitor’s handicap into the score. The golfer that
shoots the lowest score with handicap is determined the winner. A nominal $10 fee is
charged to compete for the President’s Cup trophy.

The team of Jennifer Kelly and Gina Jutila, members at Wyondatte Hills Golf Club in Twin Lakes, defeated 4 time defending champions Michele Miller and Holly Rintala by two strokes to win the Two-Woman Scramble hosted by Michigan Tech’s Portage Lake Golf Course. Their winning score was a 3 under par 69. Miller and Rintala shot a 71 followed by Jane Dickow and Cathy Shamion. Full tournament results can be found here (pdf).

The team of Tom Romps, Don Peterlin, and Ray Rilei won the Portage Lake Golf Course 3-Man Scramble on Wednesday, July 9th. Their winning score was a 10 under par 62. Two teams tied for Runner-up at nine under par 63. The teams were Jim Parker, Bill Tarbox and Richard Salani and Dennis Barrette, Rod Carlson, and Burt Arola. Parker, Tarbox, and Salani were awarded 2nd place honors due to a tie breaker. 22 teams competed in the event. Full results can be found here (pdf).

2008 Michigan Tech Portage Lake Strawberry Classic Junior Tournament |
The first annual Michigan Tech Portage Lake Strawberry Classic Junior Golf Tournament will take place SUNDAY, JULY 20TH. The Tournament is for golfers of all ages and all locations. The golfers can register in any of the six divisions listed below:
- 17 & UNDER (Boys & Girls) Players may be 18 if still attending H.S.
- 14 & UNDER (Boys & Girls)
- 12 & UNDER (Boys & Girls)
- 10 & UNDER
The 17 & under and the 14 & under divisions will play 18 hole stroke play. Registration will be at 12:30 for these golfers. The 12 & under and the 10 & under divisions will play 9 hole stroke play. Registration will be at 1:30 for these divisions.
The cost to compete in the tournament is $10. This includes hot dogs, chips, and soda following the competition. Parent volunteers are needed to walk with each foursome. Sign up in the Pro-shop or call 487-2641. |
