Housing - Residence Halls
Michigan Tech asks all first-year students, other than transfer or commuting students living with their parent(s)/guardian, to live in the residence halls for at least one year. This is an important part of your college experience. You will spend a lot of your time outside the classroom learning and living. Residence hall living will give you a chance to enjoy living on your own where you will meet new people who will quickly become your friends. You will also be able to find a study partner, head downstairs to grab a meal, do your laundry down the hall, and take a short walk to get to class.
Residence Halls
You may choose to live in one of three residence halls, Douglass Houghton Hall, McNair Hall or Wadsworth Hall. The three halls are different in size and appearance; however, they are similar in service. Each hall has its own dining hall, study areas, game room, kitchenettes, sauna, laundry facility, fitness rooms, reception desk, and lounges. For pictures of the residence halls, go to our Photo Tours page.
Douglass Houghton Hall (DHH), our smallest residence hall, has about 350 student spaces available in the three-story structure. This historic building was constructed in the late 1930s and characterizes that time period, with its beautiful architectural details.
McNair Hall has a great view of the Keweenaw Waterway. The McNair complex consists of three buildings. West McNair has two stories, while East McNair has five stories. These two living units are connected by the dining services building. There are about 650 spaces available for assignment in McNair Hall.
Wadsworth Hall (Wads) has been recently renovated and is the largest hall—one-quarter mile long and five stories high, with approximately 1,050 spaces available for assignment. Each floor is divided into “houses,” which give you a small community atmosphere.
Houses
The residence halls are divided into “Houses” that are typically comprised of 15–25 rooms. Members of each House study, eat, attend events, play games, or just hang out together. Each House has a Resident Assistant (RA) that will help lead your House by working with hall officers, planning activities and providing a assistance when you need it. Residence hall professional staff lives in each hall and maintain regular office hours. They provide information, guidance and aid in dealing with academic or personal issues.
Living Options
If you would like, you have a few options to customize your residence hall experience, including several Learning Communities.
Alcohol-free housing is offered in all three of our residence halls. This option is open to residents that have chosen to live an alcohol-free lifestyle. The use and/or possession of alcohol and/or alcohol related items are not permitted by the residents or their guests. To see a list of the alcohol-free housing rooms, you can download an excel document here.
The Community Governed Area is a living option offered in East Wadsworth Hall to students who are 21 and over or entering their 3rd year of college. Students can assist in determining some policy guidelines, like quiet hours, through the development of a Community Living Agreement. An option for 5-meal plan and a monthly room and board payment plan is also available. Kitchen and laundry facilities are located in the area.
