House Structure
All of the residence halls at Michigan Technological University are divided into house sections. This is done, in part, to give students living in the residence halls a smaller community on campus within which they can build friendships, and to give students some control over what type of community they live in through the development of a Community Standards Agreement. This is an agreement signed by each member of the house which establishes the standards of living within that house. Residents are able to vote on designating their house alcohol-free, discuss acceptable standards of behavior within the house, and choose the name of their house.
Many house names are passed down from year to year, but some houses choose to change their names. All name changes must receive the approval of the Residence Life Staff. House sizes vary from hall to hall, but on average they consist of about 18-27 rooms.
Each house is staffed by a Resident Assistant who is trained to help residents adjust to college, to be a resource for answers to questions residents might have, and to help to maintain an atmosphere in the house which is conducive to studying while helping to build a strong social community within the house.
Douglas Houghton Hall
- First Floor - Easy Street is a co-ed house and The Keweenaw District is an all male house
- Second Floor - South Park and No Name houses are all male while Crossroads and Midnight Express houses are all female and alcohol free
- Third Floor - Ground Zero and Junkyard are all male and alcohol free houses while Route 66 and the Attic houses are all male
East McNair
- First Floor - No Name I and No Name II are all male houses
- Second Floor - Bastille I, Bastille II, and Bastille III are all male houses
- Third Floor - Daddy's Girls as an all female house while the Computer Science Learning Community house is co-ed
- Fourth Floor - Mama's Boys I, Mama's Boys II, and Mama's Boys III are all male houses
- Fifth Floor - Summit House I and II houses make up the Healthy Living House Learning Community which is co-ed and alcohol free
West McNair
- First Floor - West End Girls is a all female alcohol free house while Das Lowen Haus, Powerhouse and Cellblock are all male houses
- Second Floor - I-House the International Learning Community, Strange Crew and Victory Unit are co-ed houses while Tucker Inn is an all male house
East Wadsworth
- Second Floor - Fair Warning and Incognito are all male houses
- Third Floor - Sleepy Hollow and Petoria are all male houses
- Fourth Floor - Tombstone and 4-D are all male alcohol free houses
- Fifth Floor - The Olympus and Asgard houses make up the First Year Experience Learning Community which is co-ed and alcohol free
West Wadsworth
- First Floor - Wads Suites are co-ed
- Second Floor - Armada, Citadel and Nirvana are all male houses
- Third Floor - Purgatory and Identity Crisis are coed houses while La Maison De Gaite is an all male house
- Fourth Floor - Knight House, Troy and Excello are all male houses
- Fifth Floor - Shangri-La is all female while the Burrow is co-ed and both are alcohol free. Treehouse is the Forestry Resources and Environmental Science Learning Community which is also co-ed and alcohol free
North Wadsworth
- Ground Floors- The Asphodel Fields house is co-ed Community Governed Area for residents over the age of 21 and Utopia is a co-ed house with double occupancy rooms and private bath
- First Floor - Mafia a traditional house which is all female while Atlantis is a co-ed house with double occupancy rooms and private bath
- Second Floor - Kashmir is a co-ed house with double occupancy rooms and private bath
- Third Floor - Valhalla is a co-ed house with double occupancy rooms and private bath
- Fourth Floor - Elysuim is a co-ed house with double occupancy rooms and private bath
- Fifth Floor - Penthouse is a co-ed house with double occupancy rooms and private bath.
