Residence Life - Programs and Activities
Each Resident Assistant (RA) is responsible for organizing activities either within the house, with other houses, or within the entire hall. There are five zones specifically designated as primary connection areas. These zones of connection are important in creating supportive living environments for residents in the halls.
- The first connection is to the RESIDENT ASSISTANT. The goal of this zone is to begin establishing a relationship with individual residents.
To build a relationship staff creates door decorations, leads icebreaker games, has one-on-one interactions and introduces residents to campus resources. - The second connection is to the HOUSE COMMUNITY. The goal of this zone is to facilitate an inclusive living community.
Forms of building house connections include community living agreements, team-builders, intramurals, house meetings, house socials, organizing an activity with outdoor adventures and bulletin boards. Gathering residents of a house to interact can be a spontaneous social activity or planned with either a social or educational theme. - The third connection is to the HALL COMMUNITY. The goal of this zone is to work cooperatively with fellow RAs and Houses as well as Hall Councils (IRHC, WHSA, MHA or DHHC) to educate residents about the personal impact they can have on their living environment.
- The fourth connection is to the CAMPUS COMMUNITY. The goal of this zone is to work cooperatively with the overall Michigan Tech campus to assist residents in developing support networks and exploring opportunities beyond their own residential community.
Educational endeavors connect to the campus community by informing residents about sexual assault, drugs, alcohol, alternatives to drinking, and supporting/encouraging academic performances. Connecting to Michigan Tech is deemed supporting or attending campus events. Examples include: introduction to different cultures, Rozsa Events, Athletic Events, Tech Traditions including: K-Day, Homecoming and Winter Carnival. - The fifth connection is to the LOCAL COMMUNITY. The goal of this zone is to encourage residents to actively explore and participate in the larger "world" community. Possible activities or events include community service efforts.
Service effort options include: volunteering at the human society, Dial Help, local schools, or helping at the Make a Difference Day, Stand Up for Disabilities or When You Move Out, Don't Throw it Out programs.
