Ice Arena
The arena, with a rentable sky box and a seating capacity of 4,200, is home for the Michigan Tech Hockey Huskies. It is also used for physical education classes, intramural ice hockey, and recreational skating, as well as the Summer Youth Hockey Development Center and figure skating program. The arena also serves as a special events area and can accommodate 5,600 people for such events as commencements or concerts. It is located on the first floor of the SDC.
Swimming Pool
The eight-lane, twenty-five-yard swimming pool is designed for recreational swimming and instructional classes, as well as intercollegiate competition. A separate diving well has two one-meter diving boards and a five-meter platform. An observation area allows easy viewing. Those using the swimming pool may wear only bathing suits and trunks and are required by law to take a nude, hot, soap shower prior to swimming. Gym shorts and cutoffs are not allowed. Bathing caps are optional, but highly recommended. It is located on the first floor of the SDC and is accessible throughout the community locker rooms.
Multipurpose Room
This room is located on the first floor of the SDC. This newly renovated multi-purpose room (Summer of 2006) has four hard wood floor basketball courts, two NCAA regulation ninety-four-foot courts in the middle and one eight-four-foot court at each end. A new synthetic flooring covered regulation-shaped, five-lane, 200-meter track surrounds the basketball courts. Volleyball courts, badminton courts, a pole vault pit; and a rock-climbing wall are also included. There are divider curtains, which separate each of the four basketball courts and make five more-versatile spaces for student organizations to utilize.
Climbing Wall
The climbing wall is located in the multipurpose room. If you're interested in using the wall, contact Ridge Roamers, the registered student climbing organization at Michigan Tech.
Known as the home of the Varsity Huskies men's and women's basketball teams and women's volleyball team, this facility features unique motorized bleachers and armchair seating. Total capacity is 3,200. It is located on the first floor of the SDC.
Fitness Center
Our Fitness Center has 5 TV's, air conditioning, carpet & rubber matting, plus equipped with Hammer Strength machines and free weights. Full ranges of equipment including 6 treadmills, 2 free runners, 4 stair climbers, and 4 upright stationary bikes. It is located on the second floor of the SDC.
Racquetball Courts
6 courts are available for the playing of squash, racquetball, and walleyball. Call to make reservations (2 last names required) up to 24 hours in advance. Squash and racquetball courts may be reserved for 1 hour. Student groups who are registered with the Dean of Students can reserve courts 1, 2, 3, or 4 for the entire quarter by stopping by the Central Ticket Office. Group reservations may only be made one night (max. of 2 hours) a week and must remain the same for the entire quarter. The courts are located on the first floor of the SDC.
Dance Room
With its mirrored walls and specially designed floor to provide greater resiliency, this area is used extensively by dance classes and dance enthusiasts. It is used by Martial Arts groups and other community programs. The dance room is located on the second floor of the SDC.
Rifle Range
The rifle range is located in the basement of the SDC. The following Michigan Tech Student Organizations: Competition Rifle Team, Pistol Club, Practical Pistol Club, and the Archery Club, hold hours weekly. For liability, you must be a member to use the range.
Tech Trails
Located on Sharon Avenue, the tech trails are groomed (7k) for classical and skating cross-country skiing. The trails are also used for mountain biking, snowshoeing, walking, and hiking. Motor vehicles are prohibited on the trails at all times. Cross-country ski, boot, and pole rental are available at the SDC ID checker desk (7-2761). Call for winter trail conditions.
Outdoor Tennis Courts
The outdoor tennis courts are located on the south side of the SDC. Courts are available on a first-come first-serve basis. No reservations are necessary, just go to the Central Ticket Office to pick up the gate key and make your deposit.
Sherman Field
Sherman Field, located next to the SDC, is the home playing field for Michigan Tech's Varsity Football team. It is also the practice area for Michigan Tech's Varsity Track Team.
Soccer Fields
There are two grass playing fields next to the SDC for general student use. Activities such as soccer, ultimate frisbee, and pick-up football general take place here.
Portage Medical Clinic
The Portage Medical Clinic, located inside the SDC, is available for Michigan Tech students and faculty and members of the SDC. It is complete with trainers, full-time doctors, workout room, rehabilitation facility, and pharmacy.
Hockey Education Center
The Peter J. Grant Hockey Education Center is a facility for Michigan Tech's Division I Varsity Hockey Team.
Gates Tennis Center
The Gates Tennis Center, located next to the SDC, houses indoor tennis courts. It's the practice arena for Michigan Tech's Varsity Tennis teams. It is also open to Michigan Tech students and faculty as well as community members.
Note: AN SDC membership does not cover fees at the Gates Tennis Center.
University Images
Located near the Ice Arena, University Images is the place to buy Michigan Tech athletic apparel and souvenirs. In addition to regular business hours, University Images is open during SDC special events and all home hockey games. Visit the online store.
