Commuting to School

(movie)

Be sure to consider where you will be living off campus. Can you walk to school, even in winter? If you have a car, will that car be able to make it up a steep hill to your house? Do you have the opportunity to take the Public Transit bus or car-pool? Imagine yourself commuting everyday to school, throughout the year, and make sure you live in a location that suits you.

Keep the Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock in mind. Although not much of an issue during winter, the bridge is raised occasionally throughout spring, summer, and fall. This disrupts traffic all over the city and could severely upset your schedule. Even if you do not have to cross the bridge, traffic backs up through downtown Houghton and in all directions making travel difficult.

Consider where you will park, both at your rental property and at school. Be sure your car is reliable throughout the winter and allow extra time to clear your car of snow.

Parking is available on campus for $50 per semester on a first come first serve basis. Keep in mind you may have to park in an overflow lot and walk to campus. Additional information and vehicle registration can be found at admin.mtu.edu/em/students/vehreg.php.
